JAMBO, MY AFRICAN STORY
The Entebbe Raid, 1976
In the annals of modern military history, few operations have captured the imagination and sparked as much controversy as the Entebbe raid of 1976. What began as a routine flight from Tel Aviv to Paris on June 27th, 1976, would soon evolve into a daring rescue mission that tested the limits of human courage and international diplomacy.
It all started when an Air France flight with 248 passengers was hijacked by two members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – External Operations (PFLP-EO) and two members of the German Revolutionary Cells.
The hijackers diverted the plane to Entebbe, Uganda, where they were welcomed by then-dictator Idi Amin, who provided support and protection.
As the world watched in horror, the hijackers issued their demands: the release of 40 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, along with 13 other detainees held in Kenya, France, Switzerland, and Germany. Failure to comply would result in the execution of the hostages.

THE CLASSIC AFRICAN PRESIDENT ‘APOCALYPTIC MONOMANIA’
His face is on the money.
His photograph hangs in every office in the realm.
His ministers wear gold pins with tiny photographs of Him on the lapels of their tailored pinstriped suits.
He names streets, football stadiums, hospitals, and universities after himself.
He carries a silver - inlaid ivory mace or an ornately carved walking stick or a flywhisk or a chiefly stool.
He insists on being called ‘doctor’ or ‘conqueror’ or ‘teacher’ or ‘ the big elephant ’ or ‘ the number - one peasant ’ or ‘ the wise old man ’ or ‘ the national miracle ’ or ‘ the most popular leader in the world ’... Continue Reading
In Nigeria under military rule I witnessed the Vice - President’s convoy in Lagos , a motorcade of some fifteen vehicles including an armoured car , an ambulance and two truckloads of soldiers . We were forced to stop as it roared past, sirens blaring and soldiers hanging out of the trucks pointing their guns at bystanders. I asked my taxi driver what would happen if the man just walked to work. The driver looked airily into the middle distance and said softly: ‘We would kill him . ’

Africa has more than 2000 languages and cultures and , despite the fact that we all share a single African woman as the mother of the human race , there is more human genetic diversity in Africa than in the rest of the human race combined .
Dowden, Africa, p 21
The European Union has only 23 languages. Africa has at least 2000, and between 6000 and 10,000 political or social entities , each of which once had its own governance and legal system , its leadership and customs and culture . And, like an imagined Europe unified by force by outsiders, Africans played no part in the creation of their nation states .
Their boundaries were drawn on maps in Europe by Europeans who had never even been to Africa , with no regard for existing political systems and boundaries . Half a century later Africans were given flags and national anthems, airlines and armies, and told they were now independent : Kenyans or Nigerians or Chadians .

He proposed marrying Princess Anne as a way of patching up Anglo - Ugandan relations . But the buffoon was also a monster. Later he is said to have killed one of his wives and eaten parts of her . They found her remains in his fridge. Amin became the prototype African military dictator and clown, the jumped - up sergeant who ruled like a profligate king in a wasteland of terror and destitution. His image became the emblem of Africa for decades .
